Southeast Bungelow Outdoor Room

Our client Andrea purchased this small property in southeast Portland. The inside living area was small and the exterior landscape was exposed and unusable.

After consulting with our team, she decided to create an enclosed outdoor room that would provide privacy, offer security, and create an inviting space for entertaining and relaxation.

We developed a covered area with an extensive patio that created space for ample seating, as well as a table to enjoy outdoor meals. The enclosed area provided security and privacy, as well as a place for her beloved dog to safely be outside unattended.

For enhanced security, we designed a custom gate with a keypad entry system.

The paver patio is low maintenance and created an opportunity to utilize large planters. The patio features two inset rotunda circles that are complimented by cut pavers to create a uniform rectangular space. Notice the precise craftmanship in the photo detail..

The custom fence and trellis provided a unique aesthetic, as well as two doggie windows for her pup to interact with adoring neighbors!

As a finishing touch and focal point, a canoe hand-crafted by Andrea many years ago was mounted to the fence!

The Sellwood Goat House

The Sellwood Goat House was one of our favorite projects to work on. For this project we worked from a comprehensive design that we developed with the client. This project has become a roadside attraction, with hundreds of people traveling daily to come and see this cool installation!

The centerpiece of the project was the Goat Tower and Enclosure. Our client John directs a local adolescent recovery center that utilizes goats for patient therapy. Additionally, he and his family work with an organization that offers children's goat themed parties. As part of his efforts, he needed an area at his residence to acclimate goats to be gentle when encountering children at the parties.

As part of the project, a structure was constructed to house the goats, as well as chickens, ducks, and a rabbit! The goat house features a living green roof fairy land that John and his daughters developed over a couple years. The family gets fresh eggs from the chickens, as well as endless enjoyment from the goats!

To complement the goat house, we built a goat tower to provide a more natural structure for the goats to utilize. The structure is composed of 8 tons of basalt boulders that were utiized to create a mini-mountain. On top of the mountain, we built a tower structure to create a space for the goats to chill on during the day. Additionally, under one of the perching rock ledges, we installed an echo-chamber water feature. The water feature recycles water via pump over several waterfalls, some of which create small pools for the animals to drink from. The goats love their area which is evident in the pictures and video!

Next to the wood and wire fence enclosure, we installed a rain garden. Rain chains are attached to the rain gutter and directed through ABS piping into the rock lined garden. We surrounded the rain garden with pollinator plants, and utilized sedges, salal, and ferns for the basin. Rain that enters the garden temporarily pools in the basin before infiltrating into the ground, recharging local water table, while reducing the amount that enters the city piping infrastructure.

The rain garden is situated next to the main entry walkway, providing a fascinating feature for visitors. The walkway was constructed with thermalled bluestone flagsone and curbing. At the center of the walkway, we created a large inset heart, to remind family and friends that home is where the heart is.

On the opposite side of the entry walkway, we designed and installed a spiral garden. The design utilizes boulders and cobbles arranged in a spiral pattern. In the spaces between, we planted numerous pollinator plants that are very vibrant and beautiful, providing an exceptional greeting garden for guests.
